BEAUFORT, N.C. (AP) - A Newport woman has been convicted of embezzling more than $150,000 from the medical office where she worked.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reports (https://bit.ly/1rv6ctK) District Attorney Scott Thomas said 47-year-old Michelle Morris Branche pleaded guilty Tuesday in Carteret County Superior Court to felony embezzlement and felony obtaining property by false pretense.

Thomas said that Immediately upon conviction, Branche began repaying the embezzled funds and submitted a $100,000 certified check to begin restitution.

Authorities say Branche was an office manager at the Morehead City medical office, and from January 2010 to June 2013, she embezzled the funds.

Branche was sentenced to four consecutive 8- to 17-month sentences, which were suspended. She was placed under five years supervised probation, during which time she is to repay the remaining $53,059 in restitution.
