NEW YORK (AP) - Work to return Jacob Riis (rees) Park Beach to its pre-Sandy days is underway.

The National Park Service says sand replenishment at the Gateway National Recreation Area began on Tuesday.

The mile-long shoreline will get about 200,000 cubic yards of sand.

The project is expected to take about two weeks. During that period sections of the beach will be closed.

Riis Beach is located in Queens on the Rockaway Peninsula between Beach 149th and Beach 169th streets.
