RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina Republican Senate candidate Thom Tillis continues to trail Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan in fundraising but appeared slightly ahead in cash entering the campaign’s final full month.

Tillis’ campaign said Wednesday it raised $3.4 million in the three months ending Sept. 30. It’s more than double the second-quarter total but still behind the nearly $4.9 million that Hagan’s campaign said last week it generated in the third quarter.

Hagan has outraised Tillis overall, but his campaign says it had $2.2 million in cash on hand compared to the almost $2 million Hagan’s team reported.

The campaign is considered the most expensive in the country when spending by Hagan, Tillis and outside groups are taken into account. The Center for Responsive Politics says the combined amount is $59 million.
