PORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a 68-year-old western New York woman has died after her sport utility vehicle was hit by a freight train and dragged for more than a mile.

Authorities tell local media that an SUV driven by Phyllis Poloncarz of Portland was stopped around 5 p.m. Tuesday on railroad tracks in her Chautauqua County hometown, on Lake Erie 45 miles southwest of Buffalo.

Police say the vehicle was hit by a train and dragged for about a mile and a half down the tracks before the locomotive could stop.

Poloncarz, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities were planning to view tape from the video camera attached to the front of the train to see exactly what caused the accident.

The investigation is continuing.
