GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Three Washington County Sheriff’s Department employees have been fired after the mistaken release earlier this month of two inmates from the local jail.

Sheriff Milton Gaston Sr. tells the Delta Democrat Times (https://bit.ly/1uaKvkB ) that one of the employees worked at the sheriff’s office and the other two worked at the jail.

Gaston didn’t identify the employees who were terminated.

The two inmates, Johnny Stephney and Anthony Smith are back in custody.

Stephney, who had been charged with one count of arson and one count of capital murder and was being held on $2 million bond, was caught at his home an hour after he was released.

Smith turned himself in two days after being improperly freed. Smith had been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
