A daily look at late-breaking news, coming events and stories that will be talked about in Pennsylvania on Thursday:

GUNS HOT TOPIC IN STATE CAPITOL

The state Senate voted to back a ban on pigeon shoots and for a bill to give groups like the National Rifle Association legal standing to sue municipalities over local gun laws.

… AND A LAWMAKER GOT INTO A SHOOTOUT WITH STREET ROBBERY SUSPECT

State Rep. Marty Flynn is a former prison guard who is licensed to carry a handgun. The Lackawanna County Democrat says he believes he probably would have been killed if he had not used the gun he carries to confront a 15-year-old boy who tried to rob him and fellow Rep. Ryan Bizzarro. Nobody was hurt in the exchange of gunfire.

SEAMUS ON YOU?

Pennsylvania Supreme Court Chief Justice Ron Castille says fellow justice Seamus McCaffery sent or received 234 emails with sexually explicit material or pornography. McCaffery and his lawyer didn’t comment on yesterday’s announcement though the attorney asked earlier this month “why a half-dozen private emails, allegedly from Justice McCaffery’s personal computer, are front-page news.”

10-YEAR-OLD SLAYING SUSPECT’S FAMILY NOT READY FOR HIM TO RETURN HOME

The Wayne County boy’s attorney was trying to have the boy’s bail reduced so he can get out of jail on charges he fatally beat a 90-year-old woman being cared for by his grandfather. But the lawyer withdrew the bail petition saying the family isn’t ready to supervise him. Defense attorney Bernard Brown says the boy is being given recreational opportunities and coloring books in an isolated cell in the county prison.

COACHES SEND THEMSELVES OFF

Two high school soccer coaches in eastern Pennsylvania have resigned after their players hurled Ebola taunts at an opponent from West Africa. Northampton Area Superintendent Joseph Kovalchik also vowed to discipline any students who violated the school’s code of conduct. The African boy plays for rival Nazareth Area High School.
