LEWISTON, N.Y. (AP) - The Department of Environmental Conservation has extended the public comment period for a controversial hazardous waste landfill expansion in Niagara County.

Opponents of Chemical Waste Management’s expansion plans had asked the agency earlier this week to extend the comment period for a third time. The public can now submit comments until Nov. 21.

There are about 30,000 pages of documents associated with the proposed expansion of CWM’s hazardous waste landfill in the Town of Porter.

The facility is the state’s only licensed hazardous waste landfill, and the company says it’s running out of room. It wants to expand into an additional 44 acres of CWM property.

Opponents say they don’t want another decade or two of toxic waste being shipped to their community for disposal.
