BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A Canadian woman is in custody after federal authorities say she tried to enter the U.S. illegally by kayaking across the Niagara River near Buffalo.

The Buffalo News (https://bit.ly/ZG9PqR ) reports U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr. said Wednesday that U.S. Border Patrol agents were alerted by Canadian police that a woman was kayaking across the river from Ontario toward Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island, New York, just north of Buffalo.

Officials say 32-year-old Olivia Leigh Suriani was apprehended as she approached a taxi near the park.

Suriani appeared before a U.S. magistrate in Buffalo on a charge of illegal re-entry. She’s being held pending a detention hearing Friday.
