LAKEWOOD, Wash. (AP) - A police spokesman in the Tacoma suburb of Lakewood says an officer shot and wounded a man Wednesday night after reporting the man had a gun.

The News Tribune reports that Lt. Chris Lawler says the wounded man was alert and talking as he was taken to a hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

Lawler says the officer had responded to an apartment parking lot after a 911 call about a suicidal man who was going to get a gun. The officer reportedly said he was confronted by an armed man and shots were fired.

A gun was found near the wounded man.

Lawler says the 41-year-old officer has been with the department for 10 years. He was put on administrative leave.
