WEST POINT, Miss. (AP) - Officials say an 18-year-old Starkville man is facing the death penalty in the death of a 2-month-old child.

Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (https://bit.ly/1reuRD3 ) emergency responders were called to a home in the western part of the county on Oct. 8.

Scott says Iriana Mullins was airlifted to the University Medical Center in Jackson. She was removed from the ventilator on Friday and died early this week. He says medical reports cite blunt force trauma as the cause of death.

Scott says Charles Mullins was arrested Oct. 9 and was initially charged with child abuse. Clay County investigators upgraded the charge to capital murder Tuesday.

During his arraignment in Clay County Justice Court, bond was denied.

It was unclear whether Mullins has an attorney.
