BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) - Authorities say a Vermont man who fatally shot his foster mother to death in 2000 and served more than a decade in prison is in custody after fleeing from the state.

Police said 32-year-old Scott Favreau walked away from his job at a Brattleboro restaurant Sunday night. He packed a backpack and hadn’t returned by Monday.

Police said Favreau was found in Greenfield, Massachusetts, after making a phone call to his girlfriend in Brattleboro.

Favreau was released from prison in 2013 and was on furlough. He pleaded guilty in 2001 to second-degree murder in the shooting of Vicki Campbell-Beer. Then 17, he had been taken in by her as a foster child. Her stepdaughter, Tashia Beer, was charged with persuading Favreau to kill her and served prison time.
