TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Topeka authorities say a century-old bronze urn missing from a cemetery was found mangled at an area scrap yard.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports (https://bit.ly/101lTDK ) Bailey’s Scrap Metal called the Topeka Police Department Wednesday to say it had the urn. Police didn’t say how the urn came to be at the scrap yard.

Police say the 3-foot tall and 3-foot wide urn was taken Sunday night or Monday morning. It was placed at the cemetery between 1912 and 1917 to mark the grave of Belle Hurley.

A historian says the urn was a major sight at the cemetery. She says the damage to the urn is “sickening.”
