TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - State lawmakers welcomed Franklin Township resident and Army veteran Joseph Danielsen to their ranks on Thursday.

Danielsen succeeds Upendra Chivukula in the 17th District representing Middlesex and Somerset counties. Chivukula recently became commissioner of the Board of Public Utilities.

Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto swore in Danielsen on the chamber’s floor before a voting session. With Danielsen, Democrats control 48 seats to the Republicans’ 32.

A Democrat and former member of the Franklin Township Board of Fire Commissioners, Danielsen was appointed through a vote by the Democratic committee members in the district.

“They did not send me here for a fight,” Danielsen said after he was sworn in. “They sent me here to fight for the ideals and principles that are important to New Jersey.”
