INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Firefighters rescued several people from their homes after a blaze broke out in an Indianapolis apartment complex.

The fire was reported about 4 a.m. Thursday at the Winchester Village Apartments on the city’s far south side.

Fire Capt. Rita Reith (rite) says firefighters used ladders to help seven people escape from second- or third-floor apartments. She says a 30-year-old man was taken to a hospital in serious conditions, but his injuries weren’t considered life threatening.

Reith says flames spread into the building’s attic area and burned out stairwells. Fire, smoke or water damage was reported to all 11 apartments in the building, with about 25 people displaced.

The fire’s cause wasn’t immediately determined.
