OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) - State police have taken over the investigation of an officer involved shooting in Opelousas.

Police say 23-year-old Demarcus Jones threatened someone with a gun Wednesday night before leading an officer on a foot chase.

Police Chief Perry Gallow tells KATC TV (https://bit.ly/101NQeL ) the officer followed Jones for several blocks before he allegedly turned and fired at the officer who returned fire.

Gallow says Jones was later found hiding under a house and taken into custody.

He was taken to a nearby hospital, treated for a wound to his left side and released into police custody.

Gallow say the officer, who was not injured, will be placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of state police investigation.
