RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - A 38-year-old Rutland man is going to prison for more than seven years after pleading guilty to heroin and gun charges.

The Vermont U.S. Attorney’s office said Thursday Joshua Minix was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Christina Reiss for conspiring to distribute heroin in the Rutland area and possessing a firearm while unlawfully using controlled substances.

Minix had previously pleaded guilty to the charges.

A presentence investigation found that Minix distributed the drugs while living on Park Avenue in Rutland.

Prosecutors said they told the court heroin and other opiates are “wreaking havoc” in Rutland and other Vermont communities and they urged a sentence that would send a message to drug dealers.

Minix’s attorney did not return a call seeking comment.
