MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - A historic fund-raising campaign for West Virginia University is nearing the $800 million mark.

The WVU Foundation announced Wednesday that the campaign has reached $791 million, an increase of nearly $20 million over the past several months.

The campaign has a goal of reaching $1 billion by December 2017. The goal was increased after the original $750 million target was topped.

WVU Foundation President and CEO Cindi Roth calls the giving by alumni and friends “phenomenal.”

The contributions include endowed scholarships and financial support for learning centers, among other giving.

The drive is formally known as “A State of Minds: The Campaign for West Virginia’s University.”
