BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. (AP) - A Belle Fourche police officer has been put on unpaid leave after being accused of assaulting his estranged wife.

The Black Hills Pioneer reports (https://bit.ly/1sYXOJE ) that 43-year-old Paul Witcraft was arrested Sept. 30 following an incident at the home of the couple, who had recently separated.

Witcraft is due in court on Monday on a charge of simple assault domestic violence.

His attorney, Matt Kinney, says Witcraft went to the home to talk with his wife about why their children weren’t in school, and has been falsely accused.
