SALEM, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon teenager has been returned to her family after police found her in the San Francisco Bay Area with a 41-year-old man she’d met online in a chat room.

The man, Blake Robert Johnston, was jailed without bail in Contra Costa County on an Oregon warrant alleging kidnapping and is expected to be extradited, police said.

Salem, Oregon, police reported the girl missing Tuesday and said it appeared she left of her own accord in unusual circumstances.

The next day, Salem police said she was being reunited with her family, and it appeared her disappearance had been staged. The police didn’t disclose the kidnapping allegation.

On Thursday, police in Martinez, California said Johnston was in custody.

He and the girl were in touch online for months, and her mother didn’t know about it, Martinez Sgt. Dave Mathers told the Contra Costa Times (https://bit.ly/1oencKs).

“So this is not what you would call a kidnapping as you might imagine it with a door being thrown open and someone being snatched,” he said. “But it’s just as heinous, and it’s really very chilling.”

Police haven’t provided further details about the kidnapping charge or the online site.

They said federal investigators had been called in to see whether there were other young victims.

Johnston declined to comment to the Times newspaper. It was not immediately known whether he’d obtained a lawyer.
