RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The deadline for applications to participate in North Carolina’s 2015 Bicycle Helmet Initiative has been extended.

A statement from the N.C. Department of Transportation says the deadline is now Oct. 31 at 5 p.m.

The Bicycle Helmet Initiative is designed to help local organizations supply helmets to children in need. Each year, select applicants are awarded helmets for distribution to low income children participating in their programs. State officials are encouraging all types of organizations to apply for the initiative.

The primary goal of the Bicycle Helmet Initiative is to reduce child bicycle fatalities and other serious injuries across the state.
