CHICAGO (AP) - A former Chicago police officer has been sentenced to three years in prison for shoving an 89-year-old man and leaving him with a broken hip.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports (https://bit.ly/11AYtWc ) 59-year-old David Barrett was sentenced Thursday after being convicted of battery in a trial last spring. His attorney says Barrett had been a Chicago police officer for 31 years and served in the Illinois National Guard for six years.

Prosecutors say Barrett became angry in December 2013 when a pump wouldn’t work at a gas station while he was off duty. They say he went inside to complain and pushed the man in the chest when he asked Barrett to calm down.

Prosecutors say the man fell, breaking his right hip and tearing his right rotator cuff. He needed surgery.
