PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - A former Peoria band teacher has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a high school student.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports (https://bit.ly/1tz9xjc ) 34-year-old Maury Beelman faces three to seven years in prison for his plea on Thursday to aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Prosecutors dropped a more serious charge of criminal sexual assault in the deal.

Beelman taught at Roosevelt Magnet School for nine years. Prosecutors say he had a sexual relationship with a female student starting in her sophomore year that lasted until the end of her senior year in May.

The charges allege sexual conduct until October 2013, when the girl turned 18.

Beelman and the girl tell investigators they took trips out of town together.

Beelman’s sentencing is set for December.
