ASHTON, Ill. (AP) - The police chief of the northern Illinois village of Ashton has died after being found unresponsive in a vehicle that had gone off the road in Lee County.

The Lee County Sheriff says 52-year-old Darrell Farringer died Thursday evening. Sheriff John Varga says officers arriving at the scene north of Amboy found Farringer unresponsive in a vehicle. Authorities believe Farringer’s vehicle veered into a cornfield because he had a medical issue. They say the chief was wearing a seat belt and the car had minimal damage.

The (Dixon) Telegraph reports (https://bit.ly/1qJwqtz) that an autopsy is scheduled for Friday. Farringer has been Ashton police chief since September 2012.

Ashton is a village of about 1,000 residents about 30 miles south of Rockford near Interstate 88.
