SOMERS, Conn. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate who was found unresponsive in his cell at the Northern Correctional Institution in Somers.

The Connecticut Department of Correction says 27-year-old Sonny Rivera of East Hartford was pronounced dead at a hospital on Friday morning. Prison staff who first responded attempted life-saving measures after finding him unresponsive at 7:41 a.m. Authorities say he had been alone in his cell.

Rivera was serving a four-and-a-half-year sentence for second-degree assault. He had been incarcerated since February 2012.

The medical examiner’s office will determine the cause and manner of death, which is being investigated by the Department of Correction and state police.
