IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - A student has been charged with carrying a weapon the grounds of a high school in Iowa City.

A city news release says the 16-year-old student was charged on Wednesday. The Associated Press generally doesn’t name juveniles accused of crimes.

Iowa City police say officers were sent Oct. 10 to West High School to check a report that a student had carried a gun onto school property. A teacher reported that the student was showing signs of emotional distress.

An unloaded .357-caliber handgun and a box of ammunition were found in a backpack inside his locker.
