LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The Louisville Zoo’s 31-year-old southern white rhinoceros “Lulu” has been euthanized after veterinarians found she had cancer.

The zoo says vets found an abnormal growth in Lulu’s reproductive tract in the spring and that it grew more aggressive recently. Zoo vets consulted with rhino experts and were told the type of cancer spreads throughout a rhino’s body and isn’t curable.

Zoo veterinarian Roy Burns said in a news release that Lulu’s condition would have worsened and caused her more discomfort. She was euthanized Wednesday

Lulu shared an exhibit with 30-year-old “Sindi.”

Median life expectancy for white rhinos is 34 years.
