O’FALLON, Mo. (AP) - A third-grade teacher from the St. Louis suburb of O’Fallon has received a national education award.

Discovery Ridge Elementary School teacher Jessica Karll received the $25,000 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award during a surprise assembly Thursday. A Milken official presented the award, and deputy education commissioner Margie Vandeven was on hand for the celebration.

The award is designed to provide public recognition and a financial reward to teachers, principals and other educators who have proven records of excellence in education.

Karll was named Discovery Ridge Elementary Teacher of the Year and the Wentzville School District Teacher of the Year in 2011-12. She is working toward her master’s degree in school administration.
