ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say the driver of a car that collided with a Rail Runner passenger train south of Albuquerque drove around the crossing gate before being struck.

New Mexico State Police said Friday driver, 34-year-old Julie Vasquez, also drove past a vehicle stopped in front of the down crossing gate. Police said the train then hit the vehicle, killing Vasquez and 35-year-old passenger Luciano Cuellar.

Authorities say Vasquez was ejected from the car. Cuellar was found dead inside the wreckage. Both were from Albuquerque.

Investigators say a car seat and baby items were found inside the car. Investigators learned the two had dropped off children just prior to the accident.

The train was traveling approximately 79 mph, which authorities said is the appropriate speed for that location.
