ST. LOUIS (AP) - Police say a St. Louis homeowner who shot and critically injured a burglary suspect has been arrested because his prior felony conviction prohibits him from using a gun.

St. Louis Police Department spokeswoman Schron Jackson tells The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/Zx8HFD ) the 31-year-old homeowner was arrested Thursday. She says the man told a woman in the home to hide the gun after the shooting.

Officers responded to the incident early Thursday. The homeowner tells police he fired shots at his backdoor because a man was trying to kick it in.

The 26-year-old alleged burglar was hospitalized in critical condition. Police describe his condition as stable and say they will seek a warrant for his arrest.

They haven’t released the name of either suspect. Neither man has been charged.
