BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - An effort to ban smoking on Burlington’s Church Street is moving forward.

On Wednesday, the City Council’s Ordinance Committee sent the 24-hour ban back to the full City Council by a 2-1 vote.

Council member Karen Paul tells the Burlington Free Press she expects the full council to take up the issue next month.

The Burlington Free Press (https://bfpne.ws/ZwCiPv ) reports that as currently proposed, the ordinance would ban smoking on the pedestrian area of Church Street, including outdoor seating, but not on private property.

A first-time violation would carry a $50 fine. Subsequent violations would be subject to a $100 fine.
