DETROIT (AP) - The U.S. Navy will christen a warship named after Michigan’s largest city during a ceremony Saturday.

The USS Detroit’s christening will take place at the Marinette Marine Corp. shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin.

U.S. Sen. Carl Levin’s wife, Barbara, will break a bottle of champagne across the bow to formally christen the ship. Barbara Levin is the ship’s sponsor.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus will deliver the principal address at the ceremony.

The ship’s name honors the citizens of the Motor City. A number of ships have carried the city’s name in the past.

The home port of the USS Detroit will be in San Diego.
