CLEVELAND (AP) - A man has been shot and killed by police in a Cleveland suburb after officers responded to a domestic dispute.

The South Euclid police department issued a statement that says the shooting occurred around 4:15 a.m. Saturday. The statement says officers heard a woman yelling for help and went inside the home, where they found a man assaulting a woman with a weapon. The statement says the man refused an officer’s order to stop the assault and that he was shot to protect the woman.

The news release did not say specify what kind of weapon the man was using or how many officers fired. South Euclid police officers said Saturday that they could not provide details.

The man died at a hospital.
