ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say charges likely won’t be filed after an impaired man walked into an Asheville street and was hit and killed by a car.

Police told local media outlets that the driver tried to swerve around 10:45 p.m. Friday, but was unable to see 55-year-old Ricky Coward until right before he was hit.

Investigators didn’t say how Coward was impaired. He died at the hospital a short time after he was hit.

Police are investigating the wreck, but say they don’t expect to file charges. The name of the driver was not released.
