MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana woman has been sentenced to 44 years in prison for trying to snatch a 3-week-old baby during an attack in which she wrapped an electrical cord around the mother’s throat.

A Delaware County judge ordered the sentence Wednesday for 35-year-old Judith Walker of Anderson. Walker pleaded guilty in August to burglary resulting in injury and other charges for the June 2013 attack at the victim’s Muncie home, The Star Press reported (https://tspne.ws/10lNfV0 ).

Authorities said Walker showed up at the home purporting to be a pest exterminator when she chocked the woman, who was able to flee from the house with her child.

Judge Marianne Vorhees told Walker she was disturbed by the attack, noting that “in order to commit the crime and get away with it,” she would have had to kill the mother.

Walker said she could remember little about the attack because of drug abuse. She also blamed mental illness and her failed efforts to become pregnant or adopt a child.

Walker read a statement in court calling her crimes totally inexcusable.

“I’m so sorry for all of the worry and pain and embarrassment that I’ve caused you,” she told the victim and her family.

Prosecutors said Walker planned the attack for weeks, buying baby clothing and wearing a fake baby belly to make others believe she was pregnant.

Deputy Prosecutor Eric Hoffman sought a 70-year sentence for Walker, saying he didn’t believe her apologies were sincere.

Hoffman argued that Walker set out to steal “not a TV, not a stereo, not money, but a human being.”

“This was not a spur-of-the-moment, drug-induced decision,” he said.
