ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (AP) - A construction crew has unearthed a Civil War-era cannonball at the Rock Island Arsenal.

The Quad-City Times reports (https://bit.ly/ZuJi0d ) authorities say the solid lead sphere discovered Wednesday had no explosive power. Construction workers found the artifact on the south end of the island in the Mississippi River.

Officials say it was found away from traveled roads so no precautionary evacuations or diversions were necessary. The Quad-City Bomb Squad removed the cannonball, which is now in the garrison’s possession.

The arsenal was established in 1862 and is now one of the largest employers in the region. It has made artillery pieces including Howitzers, small arms, grenade launchers and weapon simulators.
