YORKTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - A retired New York City police officer is accused of bilking Social Security of more than $300,000 in disability benefits he wasn’t entitled to.

The Journal News (https://lohud.us/1xCHuAd ) says James Carson was arrested Wednesday at his Yorktown home. He was charged with theft of government property, making false statements and failing to report income. He was released on $600,000 bond.

Prosecutors say investigators found Carson had been working for watchmaker Tourneau since at least 2004 while collecting disability for a back injury that forced him to retire in 1991.

They say Carson indicated on various forms with the Social Security Administration that he had no other income since his disability began.

His lawyer says Carson intended to defend the charges in court.

A Tourneau spokesman didn’t return a request for comment.
