FARMINGTON, Maine (AP) - A Lewiston man has been sentenced to six years in prison for sexually assaulting a young child.

Robert Parker Jr. was also sentenced this week in Franklin County Superior Court to 15 years of probation and ordered to register as a sex offender.

The Sun Journal (https://bit.ly/10mdNpd) reports that the 44-year-old Parker pleaded guilty in May to a felony charge of gross sexual assault and a misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a child. As part of a plea deal, eight other charges were dismissed, including four other felony counts of gross sexual assault.

Parker will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Prosecutors say Parker wrote a letter and told a cellmate in jail about the assault of a child under 12.
