HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Beaufort County deputies say they have charged the boyfriend of a woman found dead last month in their Hilton Head Island home with murder.

Authorities have been looking for 53-year-old Nick Evangelista since finding 54-year-old Rebecca Melton dead in the home on Sept. 4.

Deputies said in a news release that officers in Escambia County, Florida, stopped Evangelista on Wednesday as he left a beach access area in Melton’s Jeep Wrangler.

Investigators say Evangelista confessed to killing Melton and said he intended to take his own life as he traveled around the South. Deputies say Evangelista told the officers he was about to kill himself when he was stopped.

Authorities are still trying to determine how Melton was killed.

It wasn’t known if Evangelista had a lawyer.
