BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - A 31-year-old Butte man has pleaded not guilty to felony negligent homicide for the June 2012 death of his 3-month-old daughter in Billings.

The Billings Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1pIYHPm ) Jeffrey James Fox appeared before District Judge Mary Knisely via video from the Yellowstone County jail on Thursday. She continued his bail at $50,000.

The baby’s mother, 23-year-old Amanda Rose Steffen, was charged with negligent homicide in May after walking into a California sheriff’s office in April and saying she believed she was responsible for her daughter’s death. She has pleaded not guilty.

Court records say Fox told police he saw Steffen abuse or neglect the baby on a daily basis, but did not stop her or call anyone for help.

Prosecutors say the abuse included shaking, slapping, punching, suffocating and leaving the baby in a car seat in a closet.
