BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - A St. Helena Island man is going to prison for 15 years following his conviction in a deadly shootout on the island two years ago.

The gunfight outside a nightclub in 2012 left two men dead and two others wounded.

The Beaufort Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/YUpb ) that 29-year-old Joseph David Bowers was convicted Wednesday of voluntary manslaughter, assault and battery and possession of a gun during a violent crime.

Bowers had originally been charged with two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Bowers told Circuit Judge R. Markley Dennis before sentencing that he didn’t do anything and couldn’t understand why he was in handcuffs. The judge said the jury verdict was a “well-reasoned decision.”
