DETROIT (AP) - A mother says her 24-year-old son who was scheduled to testify in a robbery case has been fatally shot on Detroit’s northwest side.

Valerie Shelby tells The Detroit News that Dennis Shelby had been threatened by people telling him he shouldn’t testify again the jailed robbery suspect. Police say the shooting took place about 2:30 a.m. Thursday. Valerie Shelby says she was sleeping at the time when she heard gunfire.

Sgt. Michael Woody says there were multiple shooters and multiple weapons involved. He says he couldn’t confirm that the victim was due to testify. Woody tells the Detroit Free Press that the shooting “is just another act of senseless violence in this city that seems to be continuing.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police.
