NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (AP) - A New Richmond High School janitor has been charged with sexually assaulting a boy in the early 2000s.

Jay Flaherty is charged in St. Croix County with repeated sexual assault of a child and first-degree sexual assault of a child. Police say the 50-year-old admitted last week that he sexually assaulted the boy between January 2001 and December 2002, when the child was younger than 10 years old.

KSTP-TV reports the New Richmond School District fired Flaherty on Wednesday. Superintendent Jeff Moberg says there are no indications Flaherty may have committed the alleged crimes while he was a district employee.

Authorities haven’t said how Flaherty knows the victim.

Flaherty faces up to 80 years in prison if convicted. It wasn’t immediately available if he has an attorney.
