LA CRESCENT, Minn. (AP) - A federal report says a fatal towboat accident near La Crescent occurred because the vessel’s operator was not properly trained.

The National Transportation Safety Board report says the driver told investigators he didn’t know he had to press a button on the control board in order to steer the towboat. The operator replaced the regular driver who had to leave for a family emergency.

The Megan McB was pushed over a roller gate at Lock and Dam 7 on the Mississippi River in July of 2013 and flipped. Twenty-two-year-old Tyler Trussoni, of Genoa, Wisconsin, was trapped inside and drowned.

The Post-Bulletin (https://bit.ly/1rPgVo8 ) reports the boat owner, Brennan Marine, also says a switch that would have prevented the main engine from starting unless the throttles were operational was not correctly installed.
