ROCKHINGHAM, N.C. (AP) - A funeral director in Rockingham has been arrested on a fraud charge after questions were raised about the cremation of a body last year.

The Richmond County Daily Journal reported (https://bit.ly/1tjJWEP) that 46-year-old Larry Wayne Russell was arrested late last week. Russell is accused of obtaining property by false pretense.

Investigators said Debbie Bibee paid nearly $2,500 to have her mother cremated in May of last year.

The Board of Funeral Service said a temporary container from the crematorium had an incorrect date of death for Betsy Marsh. Regulators determined that Russell never hired the company to cremate Marsh’s body.

Regulators don’t know where Marsh’s body is. The agency closed Russell-Marks Funeral Home in August 2013 after a series of complaints.

It was not clear if Russell has an attorney.
