COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Columbia police are investigating after a human skeleton was found in some woods.

Police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons told local reporters the remains were found around noon Wednesday by a surveyor.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said it appears the remains had been in the woods for at least six months.

An anthropologist and the coroner’s office were at scene most of the afternoon gathering the remains and other material in hopes of making an identification and determining the cause of death.

Watts says he cannot tell anything about the sex or age of the victim yet.
