TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Hillsborough County is officially in the hunt for major league baseball.

County commissioners on Wednesday unanimously approved a motion by to name the Tampa Sports Authority as the lead agency to negotiate with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Rays are obligated to play in St. Petersburg’s Tropicana Field until 2027, but team owner Stuart Sternberg has said staying there is no longer financially sustainable. The Tampa Tribune (https://bit.ly/1udN6Ou) reports that the contract with the city prohibits them from looking for a new site in Tampa.

County Commissioner Ken Hagan said he feels an agreement is near that would allow the team to search across Tampa Bay.
