DEWEY, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a car theft suspect is dead after he got in a fight with a Yavapai County sheriff’s deputy trying to arrest him in Dewey.

They say Deputy Jason Morgan spotted a man accused in a car theft and police pursuit walking Friday near Highway 169.

The man ran when the deputy tried to contact him.

Morgan caught up with the suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Harvey Mullenax of Glendale.

Authorities say Mullenax got in the driver’s side of the deputy’s patrol vehicle and it began moving with the open door striking Morgan, who’s a 17-year veteran.

They say Morgan shot the suspect and the patrol vehicle crashed into a tree.

Mullenax was taken to Yavapai Regional Medical Center and then flown to a Phoenix-area hospital where he died.
