MERIDAN, Conn. (AP) - A man accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl after breaking into her home in Meriden last week has been ordered held on $1 million bail.

Twenty-three-year-old Desmond James of Waterbury, also known as Jose Gonzalez, appeared in Meriden Superior court Monday on charges including first-degree sexual assault and home invasion. His case was moved to New Haven Superior Court for a hearing Tuesday. It’s not immediately known who is representing him.

Police said the girl told investigators he threatened to kill her during the assault at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. The girl’s mother said outside court she does not know James or remember having seen him before.

James was arrested Friday night. He also was wanted for escaping Oct. 3 from a state prison system community release program. He had been serving time for second-degree burglary.
