CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) - Canon City Police Department Capt. Allen Cooper says his department is finally getting back to full strength.

The department dropped to 28 officers because of budget cuts and 10 newcomers are being hired.

Cooper says the department lost about one-third of its officers in a short period of time. Some of them moved on to other jobs, some were picked up by other agencies and some of them retired.

The Canon City Daily Record reports (https://tinyurl.com/qcfq7em ) the department is sending officers to three different police academies to recruit the new officers.

Officers are handing out community brochures and they are working with local lending institutions to try to develop low-cost house loans for officers.
