MORAVIA, N.Y. (AP) - Dozens of inmates at a medium-security prison in the Finger Lakes region are back in their dormitories after a fire in a laundry room forced an evacuation over the weekend.

State Depart of Corrections officials tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse (https://bit.ly/1t8vT96 ) that the fire started in a dryer vent in a laundry room around 5 p.m. Sunday at the Cayuga Correctional Facility in the town of Moravia, 25 miles southwest of Syracuse.

Officials say 117 inmates were evacuated from two areas of the prison while local fire departments extinguished the blaze.

Because of smoke damage, 59 inmates spent the night in the prison’s gym. The inmates returned to their dorms on Monday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The prison has about 1,000 inmates.
